Your first shopping day: a quick checklist
Prepare for your first shopping day in China with a checklist for Chinese addresses, payment readiness, budgets, receipts and purchase checks.

The easiest shopping day starts with a short list and one main area. You can always add another stop if you have the energy.
Before leaving your accommodation
- Save your accommodation’s address and the shopping area’s Chinese name so you can show them if needed.
- Check the current route and opening information for the places you want to visit.
- Charge your phone and prepare a payment method you have already tested.
- Set a budget for the day, including food and transport.
- Bring a comfortable bag and leave some space for what you buy.
Payment availability and app setup can vary. Get help from the payment provider’s official instructions rather than assuming every shop accepts your preferred method.
At the first shop
Browse before buying. Note a few prices, check materials and look for the exact version of the item you want. There is no need to decide simply because a salesperson is waiting.
Ask for the total price and the return or exchange conditions. For clothes, check sizing; for electronics, check compatibility. Keep a receipt or another clear purchase record.
Halfway through the day
Take a break. Check how much you have spent, whether your bag is getting heavy and what you still want to see. One enjoyable neighbourhood is enough for a first day.
If you are moving to another area, check the route again. A place that looks nearby on a map may still add a substantial journey to your day.
Before returning
Count your bags, save receipts and check that you still have your phone and essentials. Photograph useful labels or care instructions while they are easy to find.
For food, batteries or other items with travel restrictions, consult the relevant airline and destination authorities before packing them. This checklist does not replace their rules.
Choose a simple starting point
Explore Guangzhou, Shanghai or Shenzhen. Each starter guide gives you three areas to consider, without requiring you to visit all of them.
