A good souvenir does not have to be expensive. Start with something you will actually use, something easy to carry, or a small reminder of a place you enjoyed.

This is a list of ideas for browsing, rather than a ranking of shops or a promise of bargains. Quality and prices vary from seller to seller.

1. Stationery and small design finds

Notebooks, postcards, pens and illustrated prints are easy to fit into a travel bag. Bookshops and lifestyle stores can be a pleasant place to look without committing to a whole shopping day.

Look through an item before paying. For a gift, check that printed text, paper quality and packaging are what you expected.

2. Tea and tea accessories

If you enjoy tea, a small sealed package can be more useful than a large gift box. Ask what the tea is, how to prepare it, and how much is in the package. A small tasting can help you decide whether you like it.

Fragile cups and teapots need careful packing. Food and plant products can also have destination-specific import restrictions; check your destination’s official rules before buying anything to take home.

3. Textiles you will use

A scarf, pouch or tote is a practical reminder of a trip. Feel the fabric and inspect seams, zips and care instructions. Do not assume an item is silk or handmade because it has been described that way verbally.

If the material matters to you, ask to see the label and choose a seller who can answer your questions clearly.

4. Local snacks, with a little planning

Trying a snack during your trip is often simpler than carrying it home. If you do want a food gift, check the ingredient label, use-by date, seal and storage requirements. Consider whether it will survive a long day in your bag.

Check customs requirements before packing food for your return journey. A shop’s willingness to sell an item is not confirmation that you can import it.

5. Small tech accessories

A cable or phone stand can be a useful purchase if you can test it. Check your exact device model, connectors, voltage requirements where relevant, and return terms. Branded packaging alone does not establish authenticity.

For an expensive device, pause and compare the full cost, warranty coverage and home-country compatibility. Shopping for fun does not need to turn into a rushed technical decision.

Pick an area, then explore

  • Guangzhou: start with Beijing Road for a shopping walk, or explore the Xiguan area around Yongqing Fang.
  • Shanghai: choose a Nanjing Road or Huaihai Road shopping walk; consider the Yuyuan area for souvenirs alongside sightseeing.
  • Shenzhen: browse Dongmen for shops and snacks, or visit Huaqiangbei if electronics are your main interest.

These are neighbourhood starting points, not endorsements of individual retailers. Each city guide links to the public city sources used for its place information.

Before you buy

Ask yourself: Will I use this? Can I carry it? Have I checked the total price? Do I understand returns? If you can answer all four, you are already making a more thoughtful choice.
